Brief History

The first Amiga was the Amiga 1000, released in 1990. It was a desktop case with 1Mb of RAM and a floppy disk drive. It was followed a few years later by a streamlined version – the Amiga 500. The 500 came standard with 512k but could be expanded to 1Mb. It was priced significantly cheaper and sold like hot-cakes.

As its popularity grew, it became home to a growing legion of pirates, primarily based in Europe, with world-wide cracking networks. This period also saw the birth of the demo scene, what started off as programming prowess squeezed into a disk’s boot-block became a fully fledged media form.
The Amiga was one of the greatest gaming platforms ever. Sure, the GUI and the multi-tasking were nice but the machine was primarily used for games.
