Gods

The Bitmap Brothers were by now the stuff of legend, having had two monster hits with Xenon 2 and Speedball 2. They were megastars and each game was pored and slathered over by the games press and the buying public.
After the gorgeous screenshots had done the rounds the game was finally released. And Gods delivered. Part platform, part action, part puzzle solving the game was extremely well written and went on to much critical acclaim.
The actual game-design looks a little dated now, with a little too much reliance on key-collecting puzzles for its own good. The mechanics of controlling your character are also a little clunky, something which Magic Pockets suffered from, but which there were plenty of excellent models to base it on. (Great Giana Sisters and Harlequin for instance.)
The graphics as always in the Bitmap Bros games are very organic looking with some excellent shading on the sprites to give them that solid feel. A quick look at both Gods and Xenon 2 side-by-side will demonstrate the similarities between the two – no bad thing.
Sound was superb, as was now expected from the music-label owned company and the opening theme was Into The Wonderful by Nation XII, an indie band of the time.
Gods was converted onto a number of formats including the Megadrive and SNES but also the Acorn Archimedes!
